Abstract
5126. Payne, P. March 1. Clutches, claw and friction. - In a motorcycle hub in which the drive is transmitted first through a friction clutch and then through a positive clutch, means are provided by which the rider can, after the friction clutch has been brought into action, retain the positive clutch out of action and allow it to engage at will. The motor - driven pulley 6 and the pedal sprocket 5 are secured at opposite ends of a sleeve 4 mounted on the fixed axle 1, the hub 7 being mounted on the sleeve. A conical friction clutch member 9 is pressed into gear by springs 18 and withdrawn by an operating-member 26 acting through the plunger 20, pins 15, and positive clutch member 14, light springs 19 being placed between the positive and friction clutch members. The friction clutch is first brought into action by the springs 8, and the positive clutch member 14 is allowed to engage teeth 13 in the hub when desired, being pressed into gear by the springs 19.
