Abstract

3717. Bowen, W. A. Feb. 14. Variable - speed epicyclic gearing; clutches, ratchet. - The variable-speed driving-gear for motor vehicles and cycles described in Specification 21,615/08 is modified by the addition of another frictional clutch ring for bringing the top speed into action in a smooth manner, and is arranged with in or in connexion with the driving - wheel hub of a motor - cycle or like vehicle. The driving-pulley a is secured to one end of a sleeve c passing through the hub e of the wheel and carrying at the opposite end the driving sun-wheel of the gear. An internally toothed annulus e<4> is secured to the hub extension e‹, and the pairs of planet pinions g, h are carried on a plate f, which, as described in the above-mentioned Specification, supports a series of eccentric pawls l pressed by springs into engagement with the hub extension e<5>. A non-rotating ring i lying in a recessed portion of the plate f, is expanded and contracted by short rods r, s secured to a lever o and is adapted when partially expanded to engage the tails of the pawls l and release them, thereby giving a free engine. When fully expanded, the ring i engages and holds stationary the plate f so as to bring into action the lower speed. Between the clutch pawls l and the hub e<5> is placed a second expansible ring j, which tends to contract around the plate f, and is positively driven therefrom by a projection such as a bolt j<2> engaging one end of the ring and is also driven by a lug l<5> on one of the pawls projecting into a recess in the ring. When the gear is in the free-engine position and the cycle stationary, the plate f and disk j rotate backwards, so that, as the clutch pawls come into action, the pawl with the lug l<5> holds that end of the ring at which it is placed whereas the other end is slightly advanced by the bolt j<2>. The ring j is thus brought into close engagement with the hub e<5> to give a solid drive. The ring j may have bevelled edges engaging a corresponding recess in the annulus e<5>.
