Abstract

664. Reynolds, C. H. Jan. 9. Variable-speed and reversing epicyclic gearing.-Comprises epicyclic gearing for motor-cycles &c. in which a double friction clutch is employed (1) to connect the driving-member to the driven member either direct or through an epicyclic train, and (2) to bring an independent epicyclic train into operation for a reverse or an additional forward speed. Fig. 1 shows a form in which two speeds are obtained by the train on the left of the clutch and an additional speed by that on the right. The driving-member A' carries a toothed annulus A which gears with planet pinions mounted on a carrier C having clutch disks C<2> by which it can be clutched to the hub F. The sun-pinion D slides to engage with the carrier for a solid drive, and with fixed teeth E<3> for the low gear. The disk clutch is normally kept in operation by springs C<4> acting on a sliding ring C', which is moved to the right to disengage the clutch. Further movement of the ring brings the conical second part of the clutch into operation and locks the carrier C to the planet-carrier N of the second train, of which the sun-pinion Q is fixed, and the annulus 0 secured to the hub. This gives a high forward speed when the first train is solid. The clutch is operated by a rod H, and the sun-pinion D by a rod I. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which both epicyclic trains are on the same side of the clutch. Normally the second trains is inoperative as its annulus O is locked to the hub, and the sun-pinion Q is clutched thereto, but, when the clutch ring C' is moved to the right, it engages a stationary clutch N', and the sun-pinion Q is released from the hub, and is held fast, the high speed being brought into operation. In each of the above described forms, the additional speeds may be made lower than the normal by driving the annulus of the second train and attaching the planet-carrier to the hub. Or, the additional speed may be a reverse, the sun-pinion of the second train being driven, and the planet-carrier being fixed. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the first epicyclic train is dispensed with, and the member A drives the hub directly through the clutch disks C<2>, or through the right-hand part of the clutch and the reversing-train P. According to the Provisional Specification, when a disk clutch is employed with the reverse train, this may be used to give a braking effect.
