Abstract
221,015. Boyd, T. A., Boyd, H. A., and Boyd, Ltd., J. & T. June 6,1923. Clutches; gearing for stopping and starting machinery; securing toothed wheels on shafts.- In means for stopping and starting cheese-winding and like spindles in winding and like frames, a. rotor carries one or more free members which are driven first frictionally and then positively. The spindle 8 driving the cotton yarn winding- drum 14 is driven from the driving-shaft 3 by spiral gearing 4, 12, the wheel 4 being constantly connected frictionally with the shaft 3 by hard wood blocks 2 carried on the wheel and pressed by a hoop spring 4<3> against the shaft. The spindle 8 is normally stopped by an arm 24 on a rock-shaft 16 engaging a lug on a disc 23 secured to the spindle. To start the drive, the shaft 16 is turned by a hand lever 18, so that the stop arm 24 releases the disc 23 and, at the same time, a second arm 17 on the shaft 16 moves a positive clutch 7 to connect the shaft 3 and wheel 4 and a spring-controlled arm 19 on the rock-shaft is engaged by a pivoted latch 20. When the clutch 7 is to be disengaged, the latch 20 is moved to release the arm 19, and the friction coupling 2 ensures that the spindle 8 is rotated until the arm 24 engages the lug on the disc 23. Specifications 6333/08, 8270/13, and 29163/13, are referred to.
