Variable-speed chain gearing.-Relates to twospeed chain gearing suitable for cycles, of the type in which there is a controlled clutch in the high-speed train and a free-wheel clutch in the low-speed train. A driving-shaft 1, Fig. 3, carries a fixed sprocket 2 and a sprocket 3 normally clutched thereto and driving a sprocket 9. A sprocket 4 geared to the sprocket 2 is then overrunning. When the sprocket 3 is declutched, the train 2, 4 transmits a low speed. The hub 10, Fig. 18, of the wheel 3 can turn loosely about a ratchet 11, Fig. 7, secured to the shaft 1. The clutch comprises a pawl 12, Figs. 11 and 12, upon a spindle 12' carried by the hub 10. A lever 15, Fig. 17, on the other end of the pawl spindle 12' is acted on by a spring 18 so as normally to keep the pawl in engagement. To disengage the pawl, a spring lever 16, Fig. 15, is pulled by a wire into the path of the lever 15 as it rotates so as to engage a cam-surface 15<1> and so depress the lever 15. In the event of breakage, the pawl clutch may be superseded by a clutch pin inserted by hand. The intermediate gears 6, 7, Fig. 3, may be omitted.
