Abstract
179,004. Alltree, A. Feb. 22, 1921. Variable - speed gearing suitable for motor vehicles comprises two pairs of constantly meshing intermediate gears f, i and e, k, Fig. 1, yoked by members n, m so that each pair moves laterally as a unit in changing speed. There is a driving - shaft a with a fixed pinon c, a driven sleeve d with a fixed gear g, and a lay shaft h with a fixed gear l. The gears e, i slide on splines d<1>, h<1> on the sleeve d and shaft h respectively, and have dog ends e<1>, i<1> for engaging clutch dogs c<1>, j<1> on the pinion c and on a gear loose on the shaft h. The gears f, k are normally on smooth parts of the sleeve d and shaft h, and have internal or end dogs f<1>, k<1> for engaging the splines d', h<1>. A direct drive and three reduced countershaft drives are obtained. The yokes m, n slide on a fixed bar t, Figs. 2 and 4, operated from a gate through levers u, v. They are interlocked by a member w with two spring arms engaging notches. A kick starter r, Fig. 1, is supported in a roller bearing s in the gear-case and acts by a spring pawl r<2> on an internal ratchet v on the end of the countershaft. A snug s<1> normally holds the pawl depressed.
