Abstract
227,274. Rouyer, P. G. J. Dec. 27, 1923. Variable - speed ratchet gearing comprises a number of cranked intermediate shafts 7 to which driving impulses are given by a variable-throw cam 30, Figs. 1 and 2, and which are returned ready for the next outward impulse by a separate cam 18 upon the driven-shaft 21. Bowls 16, 17 on cranks take the thrusts of these cams and the ratchets 5 drive in one direction gear wheels 4, which drive a single wheel 3 on a driven shaft 2. The shaft 21 is of skeleton form shown in Fig. 4, and within it slides a, taper cam 27, Fig. 8, having helical outer faces which bear upon the under sides of pivoted segment cams 19, Fig. 7. The cams 19 have epicycloidal active outer faces which clear the pivots 20. As the taper cam 27 is moved to the left of Fig. 1 by striking-means 26, the speed of the shaft 2 rises until the end of the cam strikes a clutch member 28 when there is a direct drive.
