447,603. Change - speed gearing. DERNIER, T., 416, Rue Vivegnis, Liege, Belgium. Nov. 22, 1935, No. 32415. Convention date, Nov. 23, 1934. [Class 80 (ii)] A two-speed gear suitable for cycles comprises stepped intermediate or planetary pinions 21, 22 carried in a frame 14 which slides upon the pedal crank axle 1 to effect change between direct drive and a geared drive, which may gear up or down according to whether the pinion 21 is larger or smaller than the pinion 22. Long pinions 2, 24 rigid with the axle 1 and with a driven sprocket 7, respectively, are constantly engaged by the pinions 22, 21. In the position shown, the carrier 14 is locked by interengaging dogs at 15 to a fixed frame cheek 9 so that the spindles 20 of the pinions 21, 22 are fixed, and the geared drive is operative. To change to direct drive, the carrier 14 is slid to the right so that internal clutch teeth 19 upon it engage over the ends of the teeth of the central gear 2. The gear train is thus forced to turn solid with the axle 1. The sliding of the carrier 14 is effected through a striking lever 31 connected by a pivot spindle 25 to a lever control arm 29 outside the gear casing 12 which arm 29 is locked in the two gear positions by a spring ball catch, not shown.
