409,594. Variable - speed gearing. DANSK CYKLEVAERK GRAND AKTIESELSKABET, Norre Aaby, Denmark. Oct. 25, 1933, No. 29603. Convention date, Oct. 3. [Class 80 (ii).] Variable - speed driving-mechanism for cycles comprises a crank box or chamber 4 incorporated in the bottom bracket of the cycle frame and adapted to support a crank shaft 7, on which are loosely mounted two pinions 14, 15 and a chain wheel 17, a clutch member 16 slidably and non-rotatably mounted on the crank shaft 7 being normally urged by a spring into engagement with the pinion 15 to provide a direct drive to the chain wheel 17, while an indirect drive of lower gear ratio is obtained through pinions 12, 13 fixed to a lay-shaft 8, by sliding the clutch member 16 against the action of the spring into engagement with the pinion 14, as by means of a Bowden cable and a shifting-arm 11.
