Abstract

339,143. Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., and Greenwood, J. E. Dec. 30, 1929. Variable-speed gearing. - A change-speed gear of the kind having parallel shafts 7, 14, one of which has a cluster of gear wheels 12 fixed to it and in constant mesh with a second series 24 freely mounted on the second shaft, and adapted to be clutched selectively thereto by a single row of sliding dogs, has the free gear wheels 24 located on a sleeve 18 slidable on but rotatable with the shaft 14 and provided with a single row of external dogs 26. The shaft 7 is mounted in ball bearings 8, 9 one carried by the casing 2 and the other by a detachable cover 4 and carries a worm wheel 10 meshing with a worm 11 on the primary driving shaft 6. The sleeve 18, which has internal splines 19 engaging external splines 20 on the driven shaft 14, is supported by a ball bearing 30 in the cover 4 and a plain bearing 28 in a depending wall within the casing. The shaft 14 is supported at its outer end by a ball bearing 15, held in a place by a detachable cover 5, and carries a sprocket wheel 17.
