Variable-speed friction gearing of the kind in which a driven friction wheel c is mounted on a radius arm e so as to be moved eccentrically with respect to a driving-disc b to vary speed comprises supplementary gearing combined with the arm e and arranged between the driven shaft d of the variable pair and a fixed driven shaft j. The supplementary gearing shown is a toothed reducing train g, h, i, but it might be a chain pair, or a change-speed gear. The reaction of the torque of the shaft j might be arranged to move the arm e and disc c to the eccentric lowspeed position, as described in Specification 306,752, and this action might be rendered automatic in the manner described in Specification 313,303. In the arrangement shown, there is a loose wheel c' concentric with wheel c, as described in Specification 306,753, and the axial pressure required to maintain frictional engagement is transmitted through the arm e. The axial pressure may be produced by other means.
