Abstract
246,561. Mitchell, A. R. Oct. 27, 1924. Variable-speed friction gearing comprises a flexible disc which is bent at different zones into power-transmitting contact. The gearing, which may be used as a main transmission, is described in its application as an auxiliary to a toothed transmission gearing of the lay-shaft type upon a vehicle to facilitate the engagement of the change wheels. Thus a pair of discs 6, 7, Fig. 4, are feathered upon the main shaft 3 and arranged close to and overlapping a disc 8 mounted on the lav-shaft 5 so as to yield axially. Control rollers 20, 21 are adapted to be pressed selectively against the disc 6 so as to grip the system against an opposed fixed roller 29, the discs 6, 7 yielding against springs 18. Continuous speed variation may be arranged for by having a single control roller or pair of rollers movable in the line of the disc centres. Control of the main gear is effected by rocking a shaft 32, Figs. 2 and 3, and this through cams 30, 31 strikes up the levers 24, 25 alternatively, the control rollers 20, 21 being carried by these levers. To facilitate the deformation of the discs, slots 40, Fig. 1, may be formed in them. Specification 181,057 is referred to.
