Abstract

229,552. Biermann, W. June 19, 1924. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Variable-speed and reversing gearing comprises a pair of one-way clutches which encircle an oscillating member 10, Fig. 1, or conical crank, from which they derive motion, and along which they are bodily moved to vary the speed. The member 10 may be a lever which projects beyond its fulcrum 6 to provide for reversed driving through another pair of one-way clutches. The lever 10 may be oscillated in one plane by a crank disc 20 driven through a spring coupling 24, Fig. 2. The clutches slide together inside a wheel hub 1 and are adapted to drive alternately on the different strokes of the lever. A sliding yoke 9 embracing the lever or conical crank 10 has a lug with a roller 12, Fig. 3, on each side which engages an inwardly-projecting slotted lug 13 from each of two inner oscillated rings 14. On the rings 14 are mounted two clutch rings 15 having inclined bearing surfaces 16 for clutch rollers 18 supported in a cage 17. The rollers jam against a bush 2 so as to drivel continuously in one direction. In order to effect the immediate take-up of the clutches on reversal of the lever 10, each ring 14 is connected to its roller cage 17 by a set of short levers 19, which rock, as on pivots. upon the apertures in the clutch ring 15 through which they pass. Control is effected by a Bowden wire 26. In a different arrangement, speed changes may be effected by displacing the pivot of the lever 10.
