Abstract

257,792. Tallis, R. W. Nov. 21, 1925. Variable-speed gearing of the kind in which an intermediate friction member 14, Fig. 1, is transversely movable between twin driving and driven members 8, 9 and 10, 11 respectively, is modified so that a common compensating member 20 engages each half of the divided members and exerts equal thrusts upon them. The two compensating members 20 may be in the form of laminated springs which, as the gear member 14 is displaced to vary the speed, pivot about medial adjustable screws 22. The member 14 may be doubly coned as shown in Fig. 1, the twin members 8 - - 11 having projecting gear rims 12 of constant effective diameter. Alternatively as shown in Fig. 5, the intermediate member 34 may have rims 12 of constant gear diameter and the twin members may be conical and of variable effective diameters. In either case the twin members have central projections 24 extending towards one another which may abut as shown in Fig. 5 to disconnect the drive. Control is effected by a forked lever 15 straddling the intermediate member 14 or 34 and pivoted on the floor of gear casing 5.
