[Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed gearing comprising a roller 5, Fig. 1, engaging overlapping driving and driven friction discs 3, 4 and movable automatically by precession to keep the speed of the driven shaft suitable to the load, the change of resistance of controlling springs 8, 9 to movement of the roller transverse to the line of centres of the discs is proportional to the change in distance of the roller from the axis 2 of the driven disc 4. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, this effect is produced by pivoting the shaft 6 on which the roller 5 slides at a point 7 on the other side of the driving-shaft 1 from the driven shaft 2. When the load changes, the shaft 6 pivots up or down against the spring system 8, 9, and the roller slides by precession along the shaft 6 until it reaches a place where the leverage of the spring system is able to bring the shaft 6 and roller back to the aligned position of equilibrium at a different speed ratio. Arrangements are described comprising multiple gear units as shown in Fig. 1, compounded, the various rollers moving independently. An embodiment shown in Fig 4 comprises interconnected rollers 34, 35 gearing a driving disc 31 to two driven discs 33, 32. The shafts 36, 37 of the two rollers are floatingly supported, the inner end of each being connected through a lever such as 43 to the outer end of the other. The controlling springs 46, 47 may be arranged to act on one of these connecting levers 43 as shown.
