Variable-speed friction gearing comprising discs secured to the driving and driven shafts engaged by rollers rotating on a shaft which is arranged to slant automatically with respect to the load to allow the rollers to move across the faces of the discs is characterized by the method of connecting the rollers and of controlling their position. The driving disc and the driven disc J are rotated by rollers K' - - K<4> mounted on a shaft M supported by springs 0<1>, 0<2> and are connected in pairs by sleeves L<1>, L<2> sliding on the shaft M. A lever P engages the sleeve L<1> at R and the sleeve L<2> at T through an arm W connected to a sleeve U mounted on a control shaft V, and is arranged to shift the rollers to preserve equal speed ratios between the inner and outer rollers. The control shaft has came V', V<2>, and rotation of the shaft disengages the rollers from the discs; a stop V<3> on the shaft V necessitates the gear being placed in neutral, before the lever P is operated to shift the rollers for the reverse. The automatic operation of the gear may be supplemented by the addition of a bell-crank lever which varies the tension of the springs according to the position of the rollers. An alternate construction shows the outer rollers K<1>, K<4> secured to the shaft M, which is arranged to slide through its end bearings to vary the position of the rollers on the discs.
