Abstract

266,768. Gillett, E. H. J. C. Sept. 10, 1925 Variable-speed and reversing gearing may, according to a Pro, visional Specification, be constructed of epicyclic friction gear trains which each comprise an inner or outer resilient race member such as C. Presser devices act on this race member to vary the contact pressure upon the transmitting parts proportionally to the torque. The race C may comprise rings side-by-side and split at C'. C<2>. Fig. 2, or may be in the form of a helix. One presser device comprises pairs of rollers K, separated by springs K<1> adapted to become wedged between flats W on a head J and the inner surface of the race C, which is thus expanded uniformly during power transmission. For heavy duty. the flats may be replaced by suitably curved surfaces. Initial contact pressure independent of the drive is obtained by a pair of presser conical discs L<1>, O, Fig. 1. thrust towards each other by a spring M surrounding the high-speed shaft H. The head J is fast on the shaft H. A low-speed shaft G carries the planetary transmitting rollers D in a suitable cage F. The ends of the rollers D may be supported in the cage by being journaled in spaced bushes, or journaled in blocks slidable radially in guides. In the arrangement shown, it is the outer race B that is fixed.
