898,744. Variable-speed ratchet gears; resilient couplings. FAIRBAIRN LAWSON COMBE BARBOUR Ltd. Sept. 12, 1958 [June 14, 1957], No. 18762/57. Class 80 (2). In a variable-speed gear for a loom take-up motion, wherein two, as shown, or more identical cams 18 on an input shaft 12, which may be gear, belt or chain driven, are equally phased to successively oscillate, through linkages, spring biased driving members of jamming roller or spring coil one-way clutches 48 thereby rotating an output shaft 42, angular velocity ratio between the cams and the clutch driving members is varied by moving link pins 60 simultaneously within slots 56 of radial arms 52 of the clutch driving members and along tracks 72 of spring-biased levers 22 oscillated by the cams about fixed pivots 26, and each cam has a driving portion and an overlapping portion which latter produces a faster angular displacement of its associated lever 22 than the driving portion to take up clutch backlash and ensure smooth drive transfer. The pins 60 may be moved simultaneously by a common screw-traversed guide 84, as shown, for uniform velocity output rotation, or independently to permit non- uniform or intermittent output rotation. More than one output shaft each with its actuating linkage may be disposed around a single input shaft. Output torque vibrations may be damped by a spring link between an output mounted arm and a pulley (Fig. 6, not shown), by a flywheel, or by output worm gearing for low speeds.
