Abstract
1377582 Variable-ratio ratchet gear CROUZET 7 Jan 1972 [19 Jan 1971] 800/72 Heading F2D A variable step ratchet drive, e.g. of a process cam 4 in a programmer for an automatic washing machine, comprises an output ratchet wheel 5 secured to the cam 4, and stepped by a pawl 8, spring-loaded on to the ratchet 5 and oscillated by an eccentric 8c on an input shaft 9, the number of steps imparted to the ratchet being controlled by a cam 6, which allows engagement between the pawl 8 and ratchet 5 only when a gap 6a registers with the tail of the pawl, the cam 6 being driven by a star-wheel 1, which, under control of the process cam 4, is caused to assume three different radial positions with respect to a pin-wheel 2 driven at onefourth the speed of the input 9, and carrying two sets of four pairs of pins 2a, 2b at different radii and staggered 45 degrees apart. With the arm 3b on the cam step N1 (as shown) the star-wheel 1 is clear of the pin-wheel 2 and stationary, the pawl 8 being allowed continuous engagement with the ratchet-wheel 5 which is thereby stepped four steps for each revolution of the pin-wheel 2, and hence each four revolutions of the eccentric shaft 9. On the cam step N2, the eight-toothed star-wheel 1 engages the outer four pairs of pins 2a and thus makes one complete revolution for each revolution of the pin-wheel 2, during which the ratchet 5 is advanced one step. On the cam step N3 the star-wheel 1 engages both sets of pins 2a, 2b, thus making two revolutions and producing two ratchet steps for each revolution of the pinwheel 2.
