Abstract

Variable-speed gearing comprises a driving-shaft 6 with a set of cams 29, and a countershaft 15 driven therefrom through friction ratchet grips 19, and linkages having an adjustable amount of lost motion. Each cam 29 is shaped so that the shaft 15 will be driven with uniform speed. The shaft 15 drives a shaft 10, Fig. 1, forwardly through a train 44, 48, and reversely through a train 44, 49, 51, the gear 44 being movable. Each ratchet has an outer ring 21 having two arms 22, 23, Fig. 2, the arm 22 being actuated by the cam, and the arm controlled by a spring plunger 42. The cam 29 of each set acts through a roller 27 upon a spring-actuated link 42 pivoted upon each arm 22. The lost motion occurs between the link 24 and an abutment ment on the arm 22. When a bar 41 is lowered so as to depress the stop arms 23 fully, the links 24 oscillate idly, without actuating the arms 22. As the bar 41 is raised, the arms 22 are struck and actuated to an increasing extent by the links, so that the speed of the shafts 15, 10 gradually increases. The bar 41 is operated through linkwork 35, 33 from a controlling crank shaft 30. In the application to a vehicle, a detent 57, Fig. 1, is used to prevent the vehicle running backwards downhill.
