Abstract

154,113. Arthur, J. March 5, 1920. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises separate trains with planet gears 19, 20, 21, Fig. 1, carried in a cage 22 secured to the driven shaft 24. The corresponding sun gears 16, 17, 18 are secured to the driving-shaft 10, which also carries clutch teeth 42. For direct driving, the teeth 42 are engaged by a toothed element 40 having a sliding connexion 41 with the cage 22. For reduced speeds, internally toothed rings 13, 14, 15 are severally held against rotation by plungers 26, 27, 28 adapted to engage recesses 30 in the rings. These plungers are pressed into operation by springs 32, and are normally held inoperative by stronger springs 31. The clutch element 40 is operated through a lever 38 by a fourth plunger 37. A lever 44 which rocks about a fixed pin 45 operates the cuter plungers alternatively. A like lever 43 on the same pin operates the inner pair. A lever 46, Figs. 2 and 4 slides on the pin 45 so as to bring a cam 47 over the levers 43, 44, selectively. It is then rocked to one side or the other to operate the plungers. The lever 46 is joined by a pin 56 to an operating- lever 48, which moves in a gate 50. The lever 48 is locked in the gate by engaging recesses 52, 53, 54, 55 therein, being held there by a spring 51.
