Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprising stepped planet gears C meshing with two sun gears B', F and an internal gear D is controlled by claw clutches H<2>, J<1> and spring pawls N, N<x> operated by a sliding cam-bar M. The gear B<1> is secured to a driving-sleeve B upon a driven shaft A. The gear F is secured to a sleeve F<1> supported on the shaft A and having a clutch head F<2>. The carrier E<2> of the planet gears is supported on a sleeve E<3> with a clutch head E', and supports a disc E' with a notched periphery. The gear D has a notched periphery and is connected by a web D' to a sleeve D<2> with a clutch head D<3>. By means of the clutch H<2> sliding on feathers on the shaft A, this shaft can be connected to the elements F, E<2>, and D at will. Two epicyclic elements may be connected for direct driving by the sliding clutch J<1>. The elements E<1>, D<1> are held against rotation as required by spring-actuated pivoted pawls N, N<x>. The bar M has notches M<2>, M', M' into which the pawls N, N<x> drop to become operative as arresting-members, and also has pockets M<6>, M' into which the ends of levers K, K<1> engage to operate the clutches H', J<1>, respectively. Four forward speeds and reversed driving are obtained.
