Abstract

129,903. Firth, E. L. Nov. 20, 1918. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises a clutch dog B secured to a driving-shaft A, which , is slidable to bring the dog B into engagement with dogs C on a loose sleeve E, or with dogs D on a planet-carrier J. The carrier J supports pinions H meshing with a sun-gear G secured to the sleeve E, and with an internal gear D secured to a driven shaft Q. The carrier J has an extension secured to a sleeve L and the sun gear M of another train. Planet-gears N supported in an extension 0 of the gear P mesh with the gear M and with an internal gear S. The gear S is rotatably connected to a friction clutch member T adapted to coact with a like member F rotatably connected to the sleeve E. For the lowest speed, the dog B engages the dog C, and the member T disengaged from the member F is held by a brake. Both trains are operative. For the second speed, the dog B engages the dog D, the member T being held as before. A single speed-reduction takes place through the train M, N, S. The third speed is a solid drive obtained by engaging the members F, T with one another. For the fourth speed, the dog B engages the dog D, and the disengaged clutch member F is held by a brake. The train G, H, P acts alone for gearing-up.
