Abstract

Variable-speed ratchet gearing comprises a driving swash plate 6, which is tilted to vary the speed of a driven shaft 2 in line with the driving shaft 1 by moving a control member 25, which in its extreme position clutches the shafts 1 and 2 positively together. The swash plate 6 has a gear segment 28, Fig. 7, meshing with a segmental gear on a lever 27 which carries a pin 29 engaging a double cam slot 30 in the control member 25. When control member 25 is in the position of Figs. 1 and 2, the pin 29 is at the top of the right-hand horn of cam 30 and the swash plate 6 is perpendicular and is operative. When control member 25 is moved to the right to the position of Fig. 7, the plate 6 is gradually tilted and the ratchet mechanism drives the shaft 2 faster and faster. Continued movement of the member 25 brings it into clutch engagement with a toothed member 35 so as to effect a 1 to 1 drive. At the same time, pin 29 rides up the left-hand horn of cam 30 so as to bring plate 6 back to inoperative position with the ratchets at rest. This sliding of the member 25 is effected from a rock-shaft 31, Fig. 1. There are four connecting-rods 20, Fig. 3, which act in succession upon ratchets 12, Fig. 2, which are in two groups' connected by gearing 11, 10 to the shaft 2. Reversed driving is effected by reversing ratchets, which is done by turning wheels 42.
