Abstract
112,979. Haddan, A. J. H., (Osborn, A. E.). Jan. 30, 1917. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing.-In variablespeed and reversing gearing for use on motorvehicles &c., the speed of the free member of the gear is controlled by a brake and by auxiliary friction gearing driven by the driving-member of the gear, a clutch being used for direct drive In the form shown in Fig. 1, the driving-shaft 10 gears a fly-wheel 16 and a toothed annulus 11, which gears with a planet-wheel 12 carried on a frame turning with the driven shaft 20. A cage 14 screws into the planet-frame and carries a clutch part 19 adapted to be pressed into engagement with a clutch part on the Hy-wheel 16, for high-speed solid drive, by means of arms 25 pivoted on an extension 30 of the shaft 20 and acting on a ring 26 bearing against a washer 27 secured to the fixed driving-shaft 10; the arms 25 are lifted by a spool 22 and press the shaft 20 and cage 14 to the right, return being effected by a spring 28 or other means. For second speed, a brake 42 is applied to a drum 17 keyed to the sun-wheel 13 of the epicyclic gear. A friction disk 44 brought by a lever 45 into engagement with surfaces 58, 48 on the fly-wheel 16 and drum 17 provides the first speed, and a roller 52 engaging surfaces 59, 49 gives the reverse. A removable plug or bush 18 allows removal of the wheel 12. The roller 52 may be dispensed with. the flat disk 44 being inclined to engage inclined surfaces on the parts 16, 17 and movable laterally to change the speed of the drum 17 in a continuously variable manner. As shown in Fig. 3, the inclined disk 47<b> has only two engaging positions into which it is moved for reverse and slow forward-speed by an eccentric pin 68 on a rockshaft.
