Abstract

2750. Carlson, C. A. Feb. 3. Variable-speed and reversing epicyclic gearing clutches, friction.- In two-speed and reversing gearing comprising a sun-gear 16, a planetgear 19, and an internally-toothed gear 17, the changes in gear-ratio are effected by sliding the gearing as a whole longitudinally relatively to a single brake-band 54 in such a way as to operate either or both of two clutches. The sun-gear 16 is secured to a driving-shaft 12, which has a sliding connexion 13 with a hub 10 secured to the engine flywheel. The carrier of the gear 19 comprises a disk 21 mounted on ball bearings on the shaft 12, and a disk 20 secured to a longitudinally-slidable shaft 22. This carrier is secured to a brake drum 25. The gear 17 is carried by a brake drum 18 supported by a web 26 from the shaft 22 and secured to a clutch drum 27. By means of a striking-lever 60, Fig. 6, engaging a groove 53 in the drum 27, the encased parts can be slid into three gear positions, the arrangement of clutches in the drum 27 being such that the ring 17 and planet-carrier 20 &c. may alternatively or both together be connected to a driven shaft 34. This sliding motion simultaneously brings the one of the drums 18, 25 that is to be braked under the band 54, which is stationary. A solid drive, a reduced forward speed, and a reverse drive are thus obtainable. The shaft 34 carries a member 33 which can be connected externally by a disk clutch 30 to the drum 27, and can be connected internally by teeth 35, 36 to a head 37 fast on the shaft 22. The clutch 30 is brought into engagement by pivoted arms 38 also carried by the shaft 34 and operated by a cam 50 upon the shaft 22. In the configuration of Fig. 1, both clutches are in engagement. Movement of the drum 27 to the left frees the disk clutch. The teeth 35,36 remain in engagement. The drum 18 is then in position to be held by the band 54. Further movement of the drum 27 disengages the teeth 35, 36, and, by bringing the cam 50 against the arms 38, brings the disk clutch again into engagement. The drum 25 is then beneath the band 54 in position to be gripped thereby. A pedal 55, Fig. 6, is provided for operating the band 54, and a sliding bar 58 is arranged in connexion therewith. A shoulder 59 on the bar 58 locks the lever 60 against wrong movement.
