Abstract

231,639. Joseph, F. A. Feb. 28, 1924. Controlling variable-speed gearing for motor vehicles. Hand selector mechanism o is employed for obtaining any of the gear ratios other than the through drive, and selector mechanism comprising a single member 4 operated by foot, for effecting a change from any such handselected gear ratio to the through drive, or vice versa. The gearing described is of the epicyclic type in which the hand-selected gear ratios are obtained by holding a sun gear g, Fig. 1, against rotation and selectively operating clutches n<1>, n<2> sliding on a driven shaft d, as described in Specification 221,996. The sliding clutches engage sun gears g<1>, g<2>, g<3> driven at different speeds by stepped planet gears f, f<1>, f<2>, f<3> carried by the driving fly-wheel a and rolling round on the held gear g, thereby clutching the driven shaft d to such rotary sun gear. At any time the pedal lever 4, Fig. 2, may be depressed, thereby releasing the brake t, freeing the gear g, and disconnecting the drive. The brake is operated by a sliding doubly-inclined member 3. Further depression of the pedal connects the throughdriving plate clutch 3. The hand selector lever o moves in a gate G on a ball p transversely through a fixed locking gapped member p<1>.
