Abstract
300,729. Wright, F. H., and Lewis, E. W. Sept. 5, 1927. Clutches, friction; operating clutches; controlling variable-speed gearing.-The driving-disc 4 of a self-tightening fricton clutch is splined to the driving-shaft 5 and is actuated by the pressure on a thrust bearing 13 of balls 11, loosely carried in a spring- biassed plate 9 and coacting with inclined races 12 on a fixed part 7, which has a boss 8 rotatably supporting the plate 9. The driven disc 4<a> is secured to a shaft 29 and is pressed into initial engagement by a light spring 35, being further tightened in proportion to the load by a worm or helical drive 30, 36 to the shaft 37 of a changespeed gear. The sliding member 28 of the gear and the plate 9 are controlled by a single lever 22 working in a notched gate 26. The plate 9 is turned against its spring 38 by an arm 16 having slotted connection therewith and carried by a rod 17, slidable in a hollow shaft 18, through a slot 24 in which the arm 23 of the lever 22 projects to engage a notch 25 in the rod. The lever is pivoted in a fork 21 on the shaft 18, which carries the gear-shifting arm 27, so that depression of the lever opens the clutch, while lateral pressure thereon rotates the shaft to change gear.
