Application December 28,1945, Serial No. 637,704
1 Claim. (01. 74-205) My invention relates to an improvement in spindle-reversing attachments for drill-presses to adapt same for tapping etc. The objects of my invention are to provide an inexpensive, readily home work shops, this being accomplished inpart by the adaption of friction disc elements, eliminating the cost of machined gears.
I attain these and other objects by mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of the entire device, including -a partial sectional view of internal parts.
Figure 2, a sectional view of the device as it appears looking down on Figure 1 at A-AA.
Figure 3, a perspective view of a conventional bench drill press, with the device IIa attached in approximate position for operation.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the 3 views. Capital letters refer to positions and spaces. I On Fig. 1, I shaft, 2 sheave and I beveled disc element are keyed securely in one unit and rotating clockwise constantly with the drill press motor. 3 sheave, beveled disc element are both securely fixed to 4 sleeve shaft, free-running on shaft I and within bearing of housing II, making 3, 5 and 4 a fixed idling unit when not in operation.
In the forward or clockwise operation, pressure is applied by the operator at shift lever I6, moving same to position F, I0 being securely fixed to rocker arm I2 through shaft II exerts some proportional pressure on unit I, 2, I through adjusting screw 9, engaging 5 with I through the medium of idling composition friction member 6, thereby, uniting the complete vertical assembly on shaft l in one clockwise rotating unit, in which through sheave 3, a V-belt will drive drill press spindle in forward or tapping operation.
In Fig. 1,v upon moving II) to neutral or nonoperating position N, the pressure of 9 is released from I, permitting unit I, 2 and I, to drop by gravitation, closing space X, and releasing the friction of 6 with 5 and I, rendering the complete forward operating position in-operative.
During the forward F, and neutral N positions thepressure on unit III, II, I2 and adjusting screw I3 has been released from shaft I4, collar I5 and composition friction member I6, both being fixed securely to I4, thereby rendering unit l4, I5 and I6 in-operative, as indicated at Y, Fi 1.
To reverse sheave 3 to a counter-clockwise rotationremembering that sheave 2 is constantly rotating clockwise, exert pressure on I6 moving it to position R including its fixed unit II, I2 and I3 which'in turn exerts pressure on fixed unit I4, I5 and I6, engaging I6 with both 5 and I, I already traveling clockwise will drive 5 and its unit 4 and. 3 in the opposite direction by reversing the already engaged member I6, thereby rotating 3 in the opposite direction from 2. Unit I4, I5 and I6 is free running in bearing 8a.
I8, 2|, 22 and 2B are housing screws; I9 and I9a are screws to securely attach drill press post bracket 20 to housing Ila; 23, 24 and 25 are keys for affixing their adjacent parts securely; 26, 21 are ball-bearings fitted freely in shaft ends; Fig. 2, Z indicates the center of a drill press post.
What I claim is:
In a spindle-reversing device, the combination of a housing, driving and driven shafts co-axially aligned and journaled in said housing, two oppositely disposed beveled disc elements upon said driving shaft, one mounted securely to the driving shaft, the other attached to a driven sleeve member rotatable co-axially with said driving shaft and extending along said driving shaft through a housing bearing to receive a securely attached sheave, a beveled composition friction member interposed between said beveled disc elements. a second beveled composition member being mounted securely on a free running shaft within a third bearing in said housing at right angles to driving shaft, said beveled member and free running shaft being free longitudinally to engage with beveled disc elements when pressure is exerted on said free running shaft parallel to the axis of said third bearing, thereby, actuating said beveled disc elements in contrary rotation, and means applied manually and variably upon the driving shaft to effect the engagement and disengagement of said beveled friction member with disc elements.
