Abstract
173,533. Bergey, A. E. June 24, 1920. Steam and other power cultivation of land.- In driving-mechanism, particularly applicable to winding-apparartus for hauling agricultural implements, such as rakes, a friction clutch is held in engagement, against spring-pressure, by camsurfaces on a controlling-member, normally prevented from backward rotation to release the clutch by its connection to the driving shaft through a friction coupling which, however, can be caused to slip by means operable from a distance. A shaft 6, Fig. 1, driven by a motor 5, has secured to it one member 7 of the friction clutch and one member 18 of the friction coupling. The other clutch-element 8, loose on the shaft 6 and pressed by a spring 16, is carried by'a drum 4, on which is wound a rope 3 connected to the rake &c. 1. A boss 13 of the drum 4 is provided with cam-surfaces, shown developed in Fig. 2, coacting through rollers 11 with cam-surfaces on a boss 14 of the controlling-drum 9, which is of the same diameter as the drum 4. The camsurfaces may terminate in projections 15 to prevent excessive relative rotation of the parts 4, 9. The drum 9 is provided with a controlling-cord 10 operable, to the extent of a slot 21, by a slide 20 on the handle 2 of the rake &c., and has secured to it, through an adjustable blade spring 17, the second member 19 of the friction coupling. The friction of the coupling 18, 19 derived from the end-thrust of the cams is just sufficient t) prevent the drum 9 from turning backwards under the torque of the cams, but the coupling may be caused to slip and the clutch 7, 8 disengaged by a pull on the cord 10, release of which permits rotation of the parts 19, 9, effecting reengagement of the clutch. For heavy drives, where the end-thrust is considerable, the operating-pull may be kept small by a multiplication of the arrangement in series; for instance, as shown in Fig. 6, by a duplication. The main clutchmembers 7a, 8a transmit their full end-thrust through cam-surfaces and rollers or, as shown, balls 11<1>, to an intermediate controlling-member 9<1> and coupling disc 18<1> secured to the driving- shaft. The torque of the cams normally overcomes the coupling 18<1>, 19<1>, but is itself overcome by the additional torque transmitted through a sliding-claw coupling 22 from an auxiliary clutch 7<1>. 8', held in engagement by cams, rollers 11, and the primary slipping-coupling 18, 19. When the rotation of the controlling drum 9 is stopped by the cord, the clutch 7', 8<1> disengages the coupling 18<1>, 19<1> slips, and the main clutch 7, 8 is thrown out.
