Carding - engines.- In an arrangement for driving the cylinder of a carding-engine by an electric motor through a train of gears the gear is made capable of being disconnected to allow the cylinder to be driven slowly for grinding &c. The motor 1 drives the cylinder shaft 6 through the gears 4, 5 and may be made capable of sliding, or tipping on the bracket 2 so that the gear 4 is moved bodily away from the gear 5. The gear 5 may be loose on the shaft 6 and clutched thereto by a clutch 10 normally kept in engagement by a spring 15 and lever 11. When it is desired to disconnect the gear 5 a removable key 16 is inserted in the casing 14 to move the lever 11. The key carries a cross-pin 17 so that, when it is turned, the spring 15 cannot force it out. The drive for grinding &c. is taken from the pulley 9 on the motor shaft.
