Abstract
461,951. Free-wheel hubs for cycles. BAYLISS, WILEY, & CO., Ltd., and BAYLISS, C. T. Aug. 21, 1936, No. 22996. [Class 136 (ii)] A multiple-sprocket variable-speed free-wheel hub for cycles comprises an outer driven clutch member carried by the hub and an inner driving clutch member consisting of a sleeve upon which two or more sprocket wheels are directly and individually carried and which is mounted entirely upon the wheel spindle through the medium of two anti-friction bearings having races on the spindle at or near opposite ends of the sleeve. The hub shell 1 is supported on the wheel spindle 2 by two load-carrying ball bearings 3, 4, the first having an adjustable cone 5 at one end of the spindle, and the other a cone 7 forming part of a double cone 7, 8 integral with the spindle. The outer or driven member 12 of the freewheel clutch is fixed in a hub enlargement 11, and the inner or driving member 13 of the clutch, which may be of the ratchet, roller, or other type, consists of a sleeve supported entirely on the spindle 2 by two spaced ball bearings 17, 18 co-operating respectively with the cone 8 and with an adjustable cone 21. The sleeve 13 carries sprockets 16, all disposed with their planes within those of the bearings 17, 18.
