Abstract

438,778. Free-wheel and coaster hubs for cycles &c. FICHTEL & SACHS AKT.- GES., Schweinfurt, Germany. June 7, 1935, No. 16564. Convention date, June 7, 1934. [Class 136 (ii)] In a freewheel cycle &c. hub of the type having a roller clutch in which the rollers are mounted in a guiding ring or cage and are adapted to be held in the inoperative position by an auxiliary ring rotatably mounted on the cage so as to be movable partially over the openings in the cage (whereby the cycle may be wheeled backwards or forwards without moving the cranks), the auxiliary ring is positively connected to the roller-driving member so as to rotate therewith relatively to the cage. The rollers 7 are adapted to be moved outwards through apertures in a guiding ring or cage 5 under the action of the inclined bottom surfaces of recesses in the driver 6, so as to drive the hub on forward pedalling. An auxiliary locking ring 9 surrounding the cage 5 is positively connected to the driver 6 by one or more pins 14 engaging incisions in the edge of the ring 9, so that on back-pedalling (but without applying the brake), the ring 9 is rotated backwards relatively to the cage, (as in Fig. 3), so as to hold the rollers 7 in the free or retracted position. Axial displacement of the ring 9 is prevented by the engagement of indentations 11 thereon with a peripheral groove on the cage 5. The invention may also be applied to roller clutches for expanding the brake sleeve in coaster hubs.
