Abstract

1,028,749. Coaster cycle hubs. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. Sept. 25, 1963 [Sept. 26, 1962; Nov. 8, 1962], No. 37720/63. Heading B7E. A free wheel back pedalling cycle hub, Fig. 1, comprises bearing ring bodies 12, 14 mounted on the spindle 10, a drive wheel 20 and member 18 supported on the body 12 and a bearing 16 on the spindle, a screw body 30 screw-threaded on the member 18, a hub sleeve 26 which may in a right-hand position of the body 30 be driven thereby, and a brake casing, Fig. 3, having bevelled resilient tongues 32 integral with the ring body 14 and formed by cold pressing and punching. When forward pedalling, the body 30 is screwed to the right on the member 18 by the thread 28, since it is hindered from rotating by the grip-spring 33, and the surfaces 38, 40 engage to drive the hub sleeve. When the drive member 18 is stationary as in free-wheeling, the body 30 is entrained by the hub sleeve and moved to the left until the drive is disengaged. When back pedalling, the body 30 is hindered from rotating by the grip spring 33 and is shifted to the left to spread out the tongues 32 against the hub sleeve. In Fig. 2 the screw body 58 is for drive only and is controlled by a grip-spring free wheel 62, braking being obtained on back pedalling by the spreading of rollers 68 against the tongues 32. In Fig. 7 the screw body is integral with the tongues and forms the brake casing, a gripspring free wheel 78 being provided between the tongues and a surface 70 of the ring 14. The surfaces 70 and 76 may be provided with teeth.
