498,258. Free-wheel hubs for cycles &c. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and WOOD, A. E. Oct. 30, 1987, No. 29714. [Class 136 (ii)] A free-wheel and change-speed hub for cycles &c. comprises an outer sleeve 1, which is externally screw-threaded to receive several interchangeable sprockets 2 for selective engagement by the chain and is provided on its inner end with an extension 6 adapted to constitute the outer member of the free-wheel clutch, the sleeve 1 having formed on its inner surface a flange 3 arranged to form two ball races engaging antifriction bearings 12 on a built-up inner sleeve 11 comprising two bearing cones 14, 15, the inner sleeve 11 being slidably mounted on the hub spindle 13 and when assembled with the outer sleeve constituting a complete detachable unit. The extension 6 is formed with inner ratchet teeth 7 arranged to engage pawls mounted on a driven sleeve 9 screwed into a bearing cup 19 fixed to the hub shell 10. The extension 6 is concave on its periphery and is adapted to provide a surface on which the driving-chain can ride if it jumps past the inner sprocket 2. A distance piece 24 is interposed between the fixed cone 21 of the hub bearings and the inner sleeve 11 of the detachable unit, which is normally retained in position by a nut 25.
