Abstract

280,142. Konig, F., and Kr³mmel, W. July 20, 1927. B a c k - pedalling brake and free-wheel arrangements. - A brake-operating ring which is displaced axially by the chain sprocket and engages pawls on the non- rotating brake ring is also adapted to move the brake ring axially so as to engage conical elements on split expansible r ings which are wedged between the brake ring and a brake rim on the hub. The chain sprocket 5 is mounted by a screw connection on the brakeoperating ring 11 which is rotatable on the hub. During forward pedalling, the chain sprocket and the brakeoperating ring clamp between them a ring 6 fixed to the hub, the abutting surfaces of the rings 11 and 6 being further provided with ratchet surfaces to prevent slip. When free-wheeling these ratchet surfaces automatically disengage. Back pedalling moves the brake-operating ring 11 to the right and its rotation is then checked by the engagement of teeth on its face with pawls 17 on the non-rotating brake ring 16. The conical surface 23 on the brake ring then engages the split expanding ring 22 which is fixed to the hub-brake ring 9. This ring 22 expands and thereby expands a second split ring 19 fixed to the brake ring 16 until it engages a braking surface formed on the interior of the rim of the hub brake ring 9. A spring 24 tends to disengage the braking surfaces. In a modification, oneway roller clutches are arranged in the interior of the chain sprocket.
