[Class 136 (ii)] In internally-expanding brakes for cycles, and more particularly for coaster hubs for motordriven pedal bicycles, two or more expansible braking sleeves or bands disposed in axial alignment are provided, the opposed ends of adjacent sleeves or bands being expanded by coned or inclined parts of an intermediate or separating member or ring. Two split brake sleeves 1, 2 with linings 1a, 2a are adapted to be expanded into braking contact with the hub shell 3, and are separated by an intermediate ring 5, which is free to slide in an axial direction and is formed with conical.faces 5a co-acting with conical surfaces at the ends of the linings, 1a, 2a, the ring 5 being keyed to the linings against relative turning movement by lugs 10. 11 engaging recesses in the linings. The coned outer end 1b of the sleeve 1, 1a engages a fixed cone 7 secured to an anchoring arm 8, and the sleeve is keyed to the cone 7 by a key 9 on the latter. The coned outer end of the brake sleeve 2, 2a is engaged by a main actuating cone 12, which during back-pedalling is moved axially by the roller-carrying part 13 of a free-wheel clutch, e.g. through the action of inter-engaging ratchetshaped parts 14, 15, whereby the sleeves 1, 2 and the ring 5 are forced towards the fixed cone 7, the conical surfaces causing the sleeves to expand into braking engagement with the hub shell 3. The actuating cone 12 is held against rotation during back-pedalling by a roller clutch 17 engaging the inner surface of the brake sleeve lining 2a, the roller cage being provided with drag springs 18 of blade form.
