Abstract
25,997. Zinter, G. Nov. 16. Driving-mechanism; brakes.-In a bicycle coaster hub with back-pedalling brake mechanism, segments have circumferentially separated gripping-surfaces, while cam or eccentric surfaces K, L upon the driving-sleeve H expand the driving and braking segments k, l, respectively, into frictional engagement with the hub or with a brake-actuating sleeve P, according to the direction of the rotation of the sprocket-wheel. The segments, having an eccentric inner surface k<1>, l<1> and a concentric outer surface k<2>, l<2>, are retained in position by a split ring M, Fig. 7, the wings m of which enter notches m<1> in the segments. The ring, split at N, has a circular head n<1> on one end to engage a corresponding recess in the other end. The brake comprises a split sleeve R having an inturned projection r<2> to engage a groove f<1> in a fixed bearing- cone F. Between the ends of the sleeve is mounted a lever S, which, projecting into a hole in the sleeve P, has curved surfaces r, r<1> to engage corresponding surfaces upon the sleeve R. In back-pedalling, the segments l are pressed outwards to turn the sleeve P, which, through the lever S, expands the stationary sleeve R into contact with the hub. The surfaces 0, O<1> of the hub and sleeve P are preferably polygonal, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
