Abstract

1,255,450. Multiple-disc disc brakes. H. KLAUE. 15 Sept., 1970 [27 Dec., 1969], No. 43914/70. Heading F2E. In a disc brake where two pairs of (semicircular) brake shoes 9 1 , 9 2 , 11 1 , 11 2 are forced outwards, on braking, into contact with the inner annular surfaces of two portions 6, 7, of a ring secured to a drive flange 4, rotating with a wheel (not shown), the brake shoes co-operate with one or more fixed members which permit axial movement but prevent circumferential movement, and the brake - shoe operating means include bearings 17 on both sides through which the brake clamping forces are transmitted. As shown, the brake shoes, with respective friction linings 10 1 , 10 2 , 12 1 , 12 2 , are forced apart by relative rotation of rings 18, 19, having ramps co-operating with balls 20. Each ring 18 or 19 accommodates, in a track formed in it, a row of ball bearings 17. Preferably outside each ring 18 or 19 is located a thrust ring 15 or 16 which provides the outer track for the ball bearings and is in contact, respectively, with the adjacent brake shoes. The thrust rings are interconnected by pull-off springs 27, Fig. 1. Each brake shoe and each thrust ring has a shoulder engaging part of one of two brackets 2, 3, fixed to the axle casing 1 of the wheel assembly, Figs. 2 and 1; shoes 9 1 , 9 2 , are coupled by shackles 13 1 , 13 2 , Fig. 2, and shoes 11 1 , 11 2 similarly. Actuation of rings 18, 19, for brake application is by a pair of hydraulic piston and cylinder devices 21, 22, which co-operate with lugs 19 2 , 18 2 , on rings 19, 18, respectively, Fig. 2. Alternative, mechanical, actuation (e.g. from a handbrake lever) is by cable 25, toggle lever 26 and pull rods 27, 28, Figs. 4 and 2. To enable rings 18, 19 to be withdrawn or inserted radially, each may be made in halves, e.g. 41, 42, Fig. 8, abutting on a diameter, and in this embodiment both radially outer and radially inner sets of ball bearings 47, 48, are provided. Also each thrust ring is made in halves, e.g. 43, 44, Fig. 8, the diameter on which they abut being angularly offset from that for the halves 41, 42. Each thrust ring half has shouldered projections 43 1 , or 44 1 to engage fixed flange 39 or 40 respectively. Pull-off springs 45 are anchored where shown on thrust-ring halves 43, 44. Instead of ball bearings 17, 47, 48, roller bearings (not illustrated) may be provided.
