Abstract

154,609. Sachs, E. Dec. 1, 1919, [Convention date]. Free-wheel mechanism; back-pedalling brake arrangements. - In freewheel mechanism for cycle hubs, wherein an expansible sleeve 14 is pressed into contact with the inside of the hub 6 by a conical flange projecting from the hub and by the inclined faces of threads 23 upon the driving- sleeve 8, the conical flange 20 is provided upon a ring 18 which is keyed to the hub so that it rotates therewith but is longitudinally movable with respect thereto, and, upon the sleeve 14 being expanded for driving, the ring is clamped between the sleeve and a shoulder 17 on the driving-sleeve. As shown in Fig. 1, the mechanism is combined with a back-pedalling brake consisting of the sleeve 14 which is adapted to be held against rotation by the engagement of teeth 22, 21 and is then expanded into contact with the hub by the threads 23 and by the conical surface at 21 of the bearing-cone 12. A drag upon the sleeve is effected by a spring 15 pressing the sleeve upon the portion 16 of the cone. In the case of a free-wheel mechanism alone, the inner end of the split sleeve is, on free-wheeling, adapted to abut against the flange of an anchored ring on the axle, a drag spring being arranged between the sleeve and the ring.
