Abstract

498,931. Free-wheel hubs for cycles. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., SPECK, T. R., and WOOD, A. E. Aug. 23, 1937, No. 23016. [Class 136 (ii)] A free-wheel hub for cycles comprises in combination an outer sleeve 1, which has one or more sprockets 2 mounted thereon and constitutes at its inner end the inner member 3 of the free-wheel clutch, and an inner sleeve 8 adapted to be slidably mounted on the hub spindle 10 and provided at or near its ends with anti-friction bearings 12, 16 to carry the outer sleeve 1, the parts when assembled constituting a complete detachable unit, which can be slid on to the spindle 10 and secured by a nut 19. The clutch may comprise rollers 5 coacting with a ring 6 fixed to the hub shell 7 ; or a ratchet clutch may be employed. The outer end of the sleeve 8 is reduced and screw-threaded to receive an adjustable bearing cone 15. The inner end of the sleeve 8 is formed with an annular recess to receive a sleeve-like spigot 22 formed on the fixed cone 21 of the hub bearing 20.
