Abstract
491,924. Detachable wheel mountings for cycles. OXLEY, H., and SKOULDING, J. H. March 9, 1937, No. 6918. [Class 136 (ii)] In a readily-detachable mounting for the rear or driving wheel of a cycle or motor cycle, the wheel axle protrudes at each end beyond the hub, and the fork ends are adapted to be moved inwardly so as to cause the ends of the axle to enter holes or recesses in bushes fixedly secured in opposite positions in the fork ends. The bushes carry screw spindles adapted to be screwed into axial holes at the ends of the axles. The fork end slots are fitted with non-rotatable flanged bushes m, n, through which pass spindles t, adapted to screw into the ends of the wheel axle u. The bush m is provided with a fixed sleeve b on which is mounted by ball bearings, a sprocket a, formed with projections a<1> normally in driving engagement with recesses in a member c, which drives the hub g through a free-wheel clutch. When the spindles t are unscrewed, the spring of the fork limbs disengages the projection a<1> from the free-wheel member c, thus allowing the wheel to be removed, the ends of the axle sliding out through radial slots m3, n3 in the bushes m, n.
