Abstract
386,602. Variable-speed driving- mechanism for cycles. HAUPT, O., 23B, Hainstrasse, and KOPPENBURGER, F., 23, Ruststrasse, both in Leipsic, Germany. Sept. 15, 1932, No. 25690. [Class 136 (ii).] Change-speed driving mechanism for bicycles comprises a casing containing the change-speed gearing and the changing elements and adapted to be attached to the cycle frame near the rearwheel hub, the terminal wheels of the changespeed gearing being situated outside the casing and adapted for permanent driving connection, one with the sprocket wheel on the pedal shaft, and the other with the rear hub or its freewheel drive. The change-speed gear casing e is attached to the chain stay f on the outside near the rear hub, and contains gearing of the spur-wheel type (as shown) or of chain type, one terminal wheel c of which is a sprocket wheel connected by the usual chain b to the pedal shaft, while the other terminal wheel drives a wheel r on the rear hub. The gear is changed by means of a bolt adapted to slide in a hollow shaft d and provided with dogs for clutching one or other of two loose gear wheels h, i to the shaft, these wheels meshing with wheels k, l fixed to a shaft m having a wheel (not shown) arranged outside the casing e to gear with the wheel r. In a modification, the transmission is effected through chains and sprocket wheels both inside and outside the casing e.
