382,104. Variable-speed chain gearing. SHUTTLEWORTH, A., 121, Skipton Road, and HILL, W., 33, Wren Street, both in Keighley, Yorkshire. Nov. 25, 1931, No. 32650. [Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed gearing for bicycles, including motor-cycles, and other chain-driven vehicles, a compound sprocket wheel 2, 3, 4 is connected by a one-way clutch to a sleeve 5 splined or flatted to slide on the driven wheel hub 8, or on a driving or intermediate member, so as to engage the appropriate sprocket with a chain always lying in one plane. The chain passes over a guide-wheel 30 adjacent to the compound sprocket-wheel and adjustable in its own plane on a stationary or adjustable arm 13, 27, and over a spring-pressed jockeywheel 32 on an arm 31 pivoted on the hub of the wheel 30. The compound wheel is moved axially by a fork 11 actuated by a cable 21 and returned by springs 20 surrounding rods 19 secured in the fork 11 and sliding in tubes 18 secured to the arm 13, Alternatively, the wheel is moved by means arranged within the hub 8, or by rack and pinion or screw and nut means. Lubricant is supplied to the sliding sleeve 5 from the hub, telescopic sleeves 38 preventing its escape. The wheels 30, 32, and the pins 19 also are lubricated.
