563,512. Variable-speed chain gearing. ROSE, A. G., and ROSE BROS. (GAINS- 130ROUGH), Ltd. Feb. 26, 1943, No. 3153. [Class 80 (ii)] A chain sprocket formed in segments which can be moved so as to form a larger sprocket with a correspondingly greater number of teeth comprises toothed segments 61 slidably mounted on a hub 62 for movement over an arcuate path determined by keys 63 on the hub engaging keyways 64 on the segments. A plate 70 holds the segments against the hub, and the radial position of the segments is determined by spring-pressed pins 67 carried by the segments and each entering one of a series of holes 66 in the hub. To increase the size of the sprocket, a knob 67 on each pin 67 is pulled to free the latter from a hole 66, the segment is moved outwardly, and the pin 67 is then engaged with another hole 66. In a modification, means is provided to adjust the position of the segments without stopping the drive. In this case cam means, operated by a control handle, is provided to retract piiis, similar to the pins 67, and move the segments outwardly. In all cases spring- loaded tensioning devices for the chain are provided.
