Abstract

757,405. Change-speed gearing. MELLOR BROMLEY & CO., Ltd. Nov. 8, 1954 [Nov. 11, 1953], No. 31272/53. Class 80(2) An expanding gear wheel, pulley or sprocket comprises pairs of segments moved axially together, one after another, on a rotating member, to a position in which they engage a drive transmitting member such as a belt, chain or gear, to increase the effective diameter of the rotating member, and to another position in which they are out of engagement with the belt, &c., which then engages the rotating member directly. In the form shown in Figs. 9-11 arcuate segments 6 of channel cross-section engage a belt 3 and are mounted on pins 18 sliding in slots in the outer flange 12 of a rotating hub member 1. Each segment carries a bracket 22 passing through another slot in the flange 12 and secured to a rack 19 meshing a pinion 17 fast with a cam 15, having shoulders 16 and rotating about a pin 14. Pivoted levers 28, 29, connected by a link 27 and mounted on a stationary support, are mounted so that one or other of them can engage a cam shoulder 16, according to which way they are tilted, and thus, as the wheel rotates, engage each of the cams 15 in sequence. The pinions 17 are accordingly turned, and, through the rack and pinion gearing, cause the segments 6 to be moved towards or away from each other, to increase or decrease the effective diameter of the wheel. The levers 28, 29 are arranged in such a position that they cause the segments 6 to move immediately before the rotation of the wheel engages them with the belt &c. In a modification (Figs. 12, 13, not shown), the segments 6 have external teeth engaging a chain and slide on external splines on the flange 12. Wheels according to the invention are described as transmitting drive via a belt kept in tension by a spring-biased jockey pulled to a fixed diameter pulley, and to a second wheel according to the invention without the interposition of a jockey pulley. Six wheels according to the invention are described in series to give sixtyfour changes in ratio. According to the Provisional Specification, instead of the cam mechanism described for moving the segments axially, electromagnetic or electronic means may be used.
