783,099. Change-speed gearing. JARDINE, Ltd., J. Sept. 13, 1955 [Oct. 22, 1954], No. 30518/54. Class 80 (2). Change-speed gearing, for a lace machine, comprises a planet carrier 5, formed with V-belt grooves and driven from an electric motor 8, supporting planet gears 12, 16, 18 fast on common spindles and meshing a sun gear 17, fast on a driven shaft 4, and sun gears 10, 19, rotatable on the driven shaft but selectively stationed by applying brake means to drums 21, 26, to drive the shaft 4 at different speeds. The two brake means are operated by controls independent of each other. The drum 21 is formed with notches 22 engaged by a V-shaped detent 24 on a lever biased towards the disengage position by a spring 25, and operated against the bias of this spring by a pedal. The brake drum 26 is stationed when a brake band 27 is applied to it, on operation of a handle 40 connected thereto by links 36, 34, &c. and cam means 33. The sun gears 10, 17 are of the same pitch diameter, but the sun gear 17 has one more tooth than the sun gear 10. If both brakes are applied at the same time, the shape of the detent 24 and the notches 22 causes the detent to be forced out of engagement with the notches.
