616,164. Variable-speed gearing. AKTIEBOLAGET TRAMP, and LINDSTROM, R. H. Jan. 11, 1946, No. 1090. [Class 80 (ii)] A bicycle two-speed gear is adapted to be mounted on the hub 9 of the machine in place of the usual sprocket and comprises driving and driven sun gears 16, 11 and stepped planets 15, 12 mounted in a rotatable carrier 1, 2. For normal direct drive from the sprocket 7 to the hub 9 the gear is locked solid by an arcuate toothed member 18 engaging the teeth of the planets under the tension of a spring 20. For a reduced drive the locking member 18 is released by a projection 21 thereon engaging a catch lever 24 moved into its path by a suitable control device, such as a Bowden cable, and the carrier is then held from reverse rotation by a pawl 25 connected to the lever 24 by a spring 26 and engaging with a projection 22 on the carrier 1, 2.
