Abstract

956,611. Change-speed gear. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. Sept. 27, 1961 [Oct. 27, 1960], No. 34751/61. Heading F2D. [Also in Division B7] Change-speed planetary gearing for bicycles &c. is combined with a back-pedalling brake 25 and comprises a driving sprocket 1 slidably engaged by a toothed ratio selecting dog clutch member 3 controlled by the usual chain 20, as shown, the clutch member engaging the ring gear 8 of a simple planetary train, the ring gear carrying ratchet pawls 10 engaging a ring 11 coupled through a positive clutch disc 13 to dogs 15 fast with a driven wheel hub 17. Accordingly, direct drive between the driving sprocket 1 and the wheel hub 17 is obtained. The positive connection between the clutch disc 13 and the dogs 15 has sufficient lost-motion to allow backpedalling for application of the brake 25 to take place without jamming either the ratchet pawls 10 or additional ratchet pawls 26. To establish a high ratio drive, the chain 20 is released so that the ratio selecting dog clutch member 3 moves leftwards into engagement with a planet carrier 4 mounting planet pinions 5 meshing a stationary sun gear 6 and also meshing the ring gear 8. Drive then passesfrom the sprocket 1, through the clutch member 3, the planet carrier 4 and the planet pinions 5, the ring gear 8, the ratchet pawls 10 and their associated ring 11, the clutch disc 13 and the dogs 15 to the wheel hub 17. By pulling the dog clutch member 3 rightwards from the position shown, teeth 23 at its end abut through a thrust ring 24 with the positive clutch disc 13, which is simultaneously slidden rightwards out of engagement with the ratchet ring 11, thus declutched from the wheel hub 17. Drive now passes from the sprocket 1 and the ratio-selecting clutch member 3 to the ring gear 8, the planet pinions 5 and the planet carrier 4, which is disengaged, and thence to pawls 26 mounted upon the carrier, which transmit drive through teeth 19 to the wheel hub 17 at a reduced ratio. In a modified form, Fig. 4 (not shown), the ratio selecting dog member engages slots, instead of teeth, in a sleeve fast with the drive sprocket. Specifications 894,144 and 912,633 are referred to.
