Abstract

625,124. Expanding wheel gearing. STEINER, M. Aug. 27, 1946, No. 25684. Convention date, Sept. 17, 1943. [Class 80 (ii)] An expanding chain wheel for a variable speed chain gear comprises a number of sprockets 5 mounted on a support 6 so as to be movable radially along guides 8, each sprocket being mounted so that its rotation in the direction of drive of the chain 3 is prevented. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the spindles 12 of the sprockets are moved radially by rotation of a support 18 having non-radial slots 17 co-operating with the spindles 12, and the sprockets 5 are engageable with the spindles 12 through freewheels 14, the angular locking positions of which correspond to a multiple of the chain pitch. In a second embodiment, the invention is applied to the chain wheel of a bicycle in which case the support 18 is rotated by a pin and helical slot mechanism within the bottom bracket. In this embodiment the sprockets are rigid with pinions engaging racks on the support 6, so that the sprockets are held' in both directions of rotation, but rotate the correct amount to compensate for chain pitch whcn moved radially, the pinions being of different sizes to rotate the sprockets through different multiples of the chain pitch.
